Some Info on Elgin, Illinois
Located in the Cook and Kane countries, in the northern part of the state of Illinois, Elgin registered an impressive population growth during the past 2 centuries.
Measuring a total area of 37.71 square miles(97.7 square kilometers) of which only 1.43% are covered in water, the state of Elgin has a total population – according to the latest census – of 108,188 citizens. Accordingly, the density of the population/square mile will be 2,911.2 citizens per square mile(1,124 citizens per square kilometer).
The History of Elgin`s population growth
Although hard to believe for some of us, Elgin was not always the thriving city we see in today`s articles, documentaries, pictures etc. Back in 1835, when Elgin was founded, the population was not counting the figures we admire today. Subsequently, 25 years after the city had been founded, the population reached 2,797 citizens. The following years were the ones that had a great impact on the area since by 1870 the population had almost doubled. The 1900`s welcomed Elgin that was now counting a total population of 22,433 citizens. The continuous growth of the city made possible a great development in Elgin if we are to consider that in 1950 the population was counting 44,223 citizens and, at the beginning of the 21st century, the population had been more than doubled reaching 94,487 citizens.
Even in the past decade, Elgin, Illinois kept growing its population by approximately 16% which shows us it`s continuous development along the years.
Not so different
Despite its location and popularity, Elgin disposes of both a cultural and racial diversity.If 65% of the people are white, the city of Elgin also has in its social structure: 7% black people, 6% Asians and the rest of 22% containing a various mix of races.
Even the number of male and female citizens revolves around a balanced number, with 53,888 males and 54,300 females.
